AVTECH Releases Signal Towers to Help Monitor Data Centers
By Jeff Feinman

April 1, 2008 — AVTECH Software is playing “Red Light, Green Light” with data center monitoring.

The Newport, R.I.-based company has created the Room Alert Signal Tower for giving visual and audible alerts to IT and facility managers. Signal Towers can be placed throughout a data center or outside of it to notify managers of problems. Along with different colored signal lights and an audio alarm, the devices include a digital temperature sensor and sensor ports that can accommodate power, flood, smoke and motion detection sensors. A built-in Web server can send notifications via e-mail to computers, mobile phones and pagers.

The towers, which were announced in late March, but had begun shipping earlier, were designed for AVTECH by Patlite, a manufacturer of visual and audible warning devices. AVTECH executives said that Patlite lenses mimic the design of lighthouses.

“When they light up, it’s like a beacon,” said Michael Sigourney, a senior product specialist with AVTECH. “We use colored lenses and they work phenomenally. Whether you’re in a dark environment or you’ve got all your lights on, you could see these babies light up from a hundred yards away.”

Sigourney said that although these are mostly used for data centers, they can also be installed in restaurants and warehouses, where they monitor the coolers and serve as smoke and motion detectors.
