July 1, 2008 — Avocent Execs Jumping Ship

Data center provider Avocent will undergo a number of management changes, starting with William Dambrackas retiring as executive vice president of advanced technology. Executive president and CTO Christopher Thomas will leave in the third quarter of this year; the company said he intends to pursue other interests. Also leaving is Douglas Pritchett, executive vice president of corporate strategy, who will also pursue other interests. Avocent said it named Ben Grimes as CTO. Grimes has been with the company since 2007 and is responsible for corporate strategy and research and development.

NetApp Joins Tools With Liquid Computing

IT equipment provider Liquid Computing and NetApp have combined networking, computing and storage capabilities for a joint data center offering. The two companies call the combination a “data center in a box” and claim that customers can provide services without the complexity of day-to-day management or integrating individual nodes, disks, appliances or servers.

Brocade Releases Reporting Utility

Brocade has released a free downloadable utility and related assessment program to help customers address the growth of file data stored across their distributed networks, the company said. Brocade executives said that its File Insight product is a reporting utility for Microsoft Windows administrators in charge of managing distributed file environments using Server Message Block protocols. File Insight lets administrators obtain an overview of Windows file data by collecting file metadata and producing meaningful reports on file age, size and type. Brocade said it is able to report across heterogeneous SMB/CIFS-based storage environments.

HP Puts EYP Into Portfolio

Hewlett-Packard has rolled data center services from consulting company EYP Mission Critical Facilities Inc. into its portfolio, melding the main assets of a company it purchased in February to expand its data center offering in the Asia-Pacific region. EYP specializes in technology planning and operations support for large-scale data centers. HP executives said that the services would focus on the consulting and design of the data center, and they would help customers create scalable facilities that reduce the cost of data center operations with more energy efficient cooling technologies.

SAVVIS to Host Trading Apps in Chicago

SAVVIS has created a new data center in Chicago that gives financial customers the ability to host their trading applications in close proximity to two major derivatives markets, the company said. Customers will be able to connect to the facility with low-latency Ethernet using the SAVVIS Exchange Express service. The facility is SAVVIS’ second in Chicago and creates added capacity to serve new and existing clients. It features approximately 20,000 square feet of raised floor space and more than 160 watts per square foot of power, according to SAVVIS.

gigaCENTER Teams With IBM

gigaCENTER Service will create a new facility after signing an agreement with IBM to build a 150,000-square-foot “green” data center in the heart of British Columbia. The facility will be developed using IBM’s modular approach and will include power and cooling capabilities to support a variety of technologies from high-density blade servers to mainframes. IBM products and services needed for the project will be delivered over the three-year estimated construction period. First phase of the construction is expected to start in December 2008. The facility is expected to have 70,000 square feet of raised-floor data center space.

Protech ITS Releases Portal Data Center

IT provider Protech ITS has created the Portal Data Center service to provide computing technology to businesses anywhere in the world, the company said. Portal Data Center will be able to operate with multiple applications and provide high-speed communications. The product has redundant backup power, Internet Fibre Channel connectivity, biometric security and fire and environmental protection systems, according to Protech ITS.

CellTrust Puts Secure SMS Gateway on Windows Mobile

Mobile information management company CellTrust has made available its SecureSMS Gateway mobile device product for exchanging encrypted information on mobile phones. CellTrust executives said that its SecureSMS Gateway is now available for Windows Mobile 6.0 platform, and having Secure SMS Gateway 1.0 available on that platform expands the company’s reach to include a broader set of devices. Some of those devices include Pocket PCs, Smartphones and personal digital assistants. CellTrust noted that Microsoft licenses Windows Mobile to four out of the five largest mobile phone manufactures in the world, and that Microsoft projected that shipments of devices with Windows Mobile will increase from 11 million to 20 million units.
