Data Center Briefs: June 1, 2008
By Systems Management News Team

June 1, 2008 — HP Thinking Britain

HP
is in talks to purchase data centers in England from telecommunications provider BT Group, according to reports.

The deal is expected to be for around US$2.93 billion, and the move would deepen existing ties between the companies. Twenty-four of the BT Group’s data centers will go to HP, along with approximately 400 BT employees.

BT and HP first partnered four years ago, with BT handling HP’s European voice and data networks, and HP managing BT’s IT infrastructure.

QSGI Acquires IT Services Provider

Data center specialist QSGI has signed an agreement to acquire Contemporary Computer Services Inc. (CCSI), a Bohemia, N.Y.-based IT services provider.

The deal is for US$10.6 million plus and additional stock earnings based on CCSI achieving certain performance milestones. CCSI generated approximately $13.7 million in revenue in 2007. The company does network design, implementation and maintenance services for mainframe and mid-range processors. It also has 24/7 IT monitoring and diagnostics.

QSGI executives said the acquisition helps the company become a “more complete and pure” data center maintenance and IT services organization.

Ullal Resigns

Cisco’s
senior vice president of data center, switching and services resigned from her position.

Jayshree Ullal joined Cisco in its acquisition of Crescendo Communications in 1993 and has worked for the company for the past 15 years.

“With mixed feelings and much introspection, I have come to my decision to leave Cisco after 15 great and memorable years,” she wrote on the company’s site. “My loyalty and affection to Cisco, CEO John Chambers and my teams made this a very difficult and lengthy decision process.”

Force10 Hooks into iDataPlex

Network builder Force10 Networks has created interoperability within its switching technology for IBM’s iDataPlex rack system.

iDataPlex can more than double the number of systems that can run in a single rack and is meant to replace what IBM calls the inefficient “white-box” servers that are frequently used by Internet companies. Force10 Networks said its products can benefit large-scale data centers, as they require density and capacity.

The company’s switching and routing products had already worked with IBM’s Cluster 1350 clustering product and the Blue Gene research project around supercomputing.

Brocade Brings New Switches

Brocade
released new data-center fabric switches and server host bus adapters (HBA), along with advanced networking capabilities across both switches and HBAs aimed at simplifying management of server and storage environments, including data migration and data security, in data centers.

The 8Gbit/sec fiber channel switches range in capacity from eight to 80 ports. Together with the new HBAs, the switches offer features like fabric quality of service, traffic management and other adaptive networking services.

Internap Spreading Out

Internap Network Services
, an Atlanta-based Internet service and content delivery network provider, said it will add 15,000 square feet of data center space with the purchase of a building adjacent to its existing data center.

The company said the facility will have more environmentally friendly heating and cooling technologies and power monitoring than traditional data centers.

SoftLayer Releases CDNLayer

Data center company SoftLayer has launched CDNLayer, a content delivery network.

CDNLayer aims to optimize the delivery of Web content so that it arrives to end users faster, the company said. The product uses a network of multiple server nodes running software that organizes and streams online content. CDNLayer moves content from the host server to a node closer to the end user, minimizing the distance the data has to travel, according to the company.
