HP Brings Data Center Transformation Portfolio
By Jeff Feinman

April 1, 2008 — HP is looking to help IT managers transform their data centers from a collection of physical assets into a virtual infrastructure.

The HP Data Center Transformation portfolio, which was made available in mid-March, brings products and services that focus on energy efficiency, automation, virtualization and business continuity, company executives said.

“Virtualization has emerged as a key foundational technology,” said John Bennett, HP’s worldwide director of Data Center Transformation solutions. “It’s a key element in a next generation data center, providing support for a more agile and flexible infrastructure. Given its value and pervasiveness, looking at virtualization strategically makes a lot of sense, rather than just investing in piecemeal solutions.”

One of the main aspects of the HP Data Center Transformation suite is HP Critical Facilities, services that help customers create scalable facilities with energy-efficient power and cooling technologies. HP Critical Facilities came from the company’s acquisition of EYP Mission Critical Facilities in November 2007, bringing in its consulting for designing large-scale data centers. Bennett said the EYP acquisition brought in top facilities design and engineering professionals to HP.

The HP Data Center Consolidation piece of the portfolio is a service for helping customers reduce the number of their facilities, thereby lowering energy and operations costs, according to the company. A new virtualization service helps data center managers make virtual their servers, storage, networks and applications.

The HP Data Center Transformation portfolio brings the ProLiant DL785 G5 server, which is an eight-socket x86 server that HP claims is an ideal platform for virtualization because of its processing power and storing capacity. It consolidates multiple servers to reduce management and space issues associated with server sprawl. The ProLiant DL785 G5 server is based on Quad-Core AMD Opteron processor technology, which AMD claims provides more memory bandwidth and CPU resources for virtualization than other processors.

Software With a View
Another feature of the portfolio is software that can display views of physical or virtual data center resources. HP executives say that the software can help extend the life of data centers with energy-aware capacity planning. The software, entitled HP Insight Dynamics - VSE, can plug into HP’s System Insight Manager platform management software.

“HP Insight Dynamics -VSE provides an interface for a single screen view to manage all available virtual and physical resources, including hypervisors from multiple vendors,” Bennett said. “Data center administrators can view the big picture or obtain a detailed view of a single resource within the same screen without switching tools.”

The portfolio can be installed in a format that HP calls Adaptive Infrastructure as a Service, which gives customers access to HP managed data centers that work with Microsoft Exchange, SAP and other business applications.
