Microsoft Releases SQL Server 2008
By Michelle Savage

August 6, 2008 — Microsoft today announced the release to manufacturing of Microsoft SQL Server 2008, the latest version of the company's data management and business intelligence platform.

According to Ted Kummert, corporate vice president of the data and storage platform division at Microsoft, customers complained that the five-year lag between the 2000 and 2005 version releases was too long. Although SQL Server 2008’s release was delayed from its initial February target, Microsoft met its goal of having a new version within 24 to 36 months from the release of SQL Server 2005.

As of today, SQL Server 2008 is available to MSDN and TechNet subscribers, and a downloadable version will be available for evaluation tomorrow, said Kummert. He added that the pricing has not changed from the 2005 edition, although a long list of new features have been added.

According to Dan Jones, program manager on the SQL Server team, while many customers may be reluctant to upgrade from 2005 at first, there are many compelling reasons to do so. Jones cited the top 10 new features in a press conference today:

1
Resource Governor, which simplifies management of concurrent workloads
2
Policy-based management, to ensure policy compliance consistently across the enterprise
3
Data compression and sparse columns, which reduces storage requirements and increases query performance
4
Transparent Data Encryption and advanced auditing, which protects sensitive data
5
Performance system analysis, which simplifies troubleshooting, tuning and monitoring SQL Server 2008 instances across the enterprise
6
SQL Server Analysis Services, which helps build high-performance analysis solutions with scalability, performance, data mining and user interface enhancements
7
SQL Server Reporting Services, for better performance, usability and visualization, and full interoperability with the 2007 Microsoft Office system
8
Report Builder, which allows information workers to easily build reports, provides enhanced report layouts and new visualization options, and offers the ability to access reports directly from within Office Word
9
Support for spatial data, for compatibility with location-enabled applications
10
Easy to install and upgrade

SQL Server 2008 comes in a number of editions, including the free SQL Server 2008 Express and SQL Server 2008 Compact versions. Other editions include standard, work group, developer, Web and enterprise versions.
