Microsoft Extends Enterprise Search Capabilities




April 25, 2008 —  Microsoft announced today that it has completed its US$1.2 billion purchase of FAST Search & Transfer, a provider of enterprise search solutions.

John Markus Lervik, FAST CEO, will become Microsoft's corporate vice president of enterprise search. FAST will operate as a Microsoft subsidiary, with an enterprise search research and development center in Oslo, Norway, and offices throughout the world.

According to Microsoft, Lervik's group will develop a full line of enterprise search
products, including Microsoft Search Server 2008 Express, search for Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 and FAST ESP, and future delivery of a single enterprise search platform. The group will also work on developing a single enterprise search platform as well.

Microsoft pointed out that further innovation across the entire enterprise search portfolio will extend to Linux and UNIX, as well as Windows.
