CUPS Vulnerabilities Patched

May 5, 2008 —  A number of new vulnerabilities were found in the Common UNIX Printing System (CUPS) last month, but many operating systems are still trickling out the updated package. The vulnerabilities addressed in the new version of CUPS included an overflow that could be triggered by a massive .PNG image file, and an unencrypted Samba password and login file saved on disk. Additionally, some Linux related bugs were fixed in version 1.3.7 on April 1.

But many Linux distributions are just now distributing version 1.3.7 of CUPS as a replacement for previously vulnerable versions. Today, Ubuntu's repositories were seeded with the new version, and late last month, Gentoo Linux was also updated. All new CUPS packages can be found in standard source code repositories for these Linux distributions.
