Flomerics Holds Cooling Workshops
U.K.-based engineering simulation and consultancy services provider Flomerics is holding workshops on how to optimize cooling and thermal performance of data centers. The three-day workshop includes two days of training, while the third day is devoted to helping attendees model their own data center, according to Flomerics. The workshop will explain how to simulate the thermal performance of a data center configuration using templates and libraries with drag and drop interactivity. Using the software, participants can add computer air conditioners and create the room layout to determine proper cooling methods. Salesforce.com Sets Up in Singapore
Software-as-a-service provider Salesforce.com is building a data center in Singapore, its first international data center. The company said it plans to establish a network operations center in Singapore to implement 24x7 monitoring of all of its facilities. Salesforce executives said its Asia Pacific customer base has doubled over the last year. The data center is expected to go live by the end of this year.

IBM Opens Mexico Center
IBM has opened a data center that it claims is specifically designed to help clients develop long-term plans to manage and archive massive amounts of business information. The center was opened in Guadalajara, Mexico, and IBM said the center addresses increasing information storage capacities. IBM archive subject matter consultants will simulate customer environments and carry out other tasks in the center using IBM software and storage technologies, according to the company. The new center is part of IBM’s New Enterprise Data Center strategy, which is a model that utilizes best practices for virtualization, energy efficiency, service management and cloud computing.

QSGI Revenue Dips
QSGI announced a total revenue for the first quarter of 2008 of US$8.2 million, compared with $9.4 million a year before. Company executives said they attribute the decrease in revenue to a restructuring of its data center hardware division. Gross profit was $1.6 million, compared to $2.7 million the same quarter in 2007. Though total revenue was down, the company said it had a 24.7 percent increase in revenue within its data center maintenance division for the first quarter of 2008. The company is also reporting a 32.3 percent increase in revenue within its data security division.

Cassatt Adds Automatic Turn-Off
Data center software provider Cassatt has created the ability in its Active Response products to automatically turn servers off when they’re idle. Powering servers down automatically can cut data center energy use by 30 percent or more, the company said. Cassatt Active Response 5.1 also has the ability to use demand-based policies to manage IT infrastructure in real time and compatibility with third-party management products, according to the company. Executives said the new policies in Active Response 5.1 ensure that the data center uses no more resources than it needs to meet business requirements.
