Ethernet Alliance Wraps Around Data Centers

June 18, 2008 —  The Ethernet Alliance, a nonprofit group concentrating on IEEE 802 Ethernet standards, has created a subcommittee for data centers to serve as a resource for IT professionals on Ethernet technologies and standards.

The subcommittee, announced yesterday, will try to figure out the best way to handle the demand on Ethernet networking in data centers, as Ethernet is utilized in more technologies and methods. These include latency data center application networking, unified fabric over Ethernet, and energy-efficient Ethernet, according to the Ethernet Alliance.

The Alliance will also look to make improvements to any potential technical aspects with the intention of having Ethernet remain the best choice for IT professionals to meet networking requirements, Alliance executives said.

The Ethernet Alliance sponsors activities to promote Ethernet adoption, and it attempts to provide a voice to explain Ethernet projects and development. Some of its members are Brocade, Cisco, Force 10, IBM, Intel and Sun Microsystems.
