Virtualization Touted at Conference

June 26, 2008 —  Virtualization companies packed into the Roosevelt Hotel in New York City on Monday for the Virtualization Conference and Expo 2008. Inside, they were showing off new products and discussing some of the branches of technology in which virtualization has been spreading.

Among the keynote speakers at the event on Monday was VMware CTO Stephen Herrod, who gave an informative talk about the benefits of virtualizing data centers, including server consolidation. Herrod ran through the basics of virtualization, noting how with virtual machines (VM), organizations can manage the data center and streamline desktop management to reduce operating costs, Herrod said. VMware’s Virtual Desktop Infrastructure, for instance, lets companies run desktops inside VMs located in a central data center, and users access these desktops remotely from a PC or a thin client.

The exhibition hall in the Roosevelt Hotel was lively with virtualization companies big and small. Israel-based Ceedo was showing off its newly released Ceedo Enterprise, a virtualization product that allows IT administrators to manage desktop workspace environments for application portability and disaster recovery.

“[Users] can easily be given access through the Web, network or a USB device to a full workspace of enterprise applications,” said Opher Dubrovsky, Ceedo’s vice president of marketing and business development. “The IT administrator gets the flexibility to quickly deploy and later on remotely manage these workspaces.”

Embotics provided virtualization life-cycle management products, which the company said let users integrate into ITIL, business delivery practices and data center management systems. VMs have three phases of life, Embotics said. They are first created, then they have their active period in the IT environment, and then they are terminated.

The company released V-Commander 2.0, which it said prevents virtual sprawl, which can happen if companies run too many VMs and cannot properly manage them. Embotics tags VMs as they are provisioned and tracks their movement around a company’s IT infrastructure for better control. V-Commander 2.0 gives improved reporting capabilities that identify costs associated with having to get rid of expired and unauthorized VMs.

Representatives from Software AG touted the company’s approach to “virtualized SOA” and autonomic provision. As service demand increases, organizations can combine managing a service level with managing its underlying infrastructure, the company said.

VirtualLogix was on hand, talking about how real-time virtualization can benefit electronic devices like mobile handhelds, core networks, access point devices and other communications equipment. Virtualization can help manufacturers speed up putting mobile devices on market, since VirtualLogix products enable multiple operating systems to run concurrently on shared hardware. It also offers reduced power and improved security, the company said.
