Cognos Releases Business Intelligence Software for System z Mainframe

July 1, 2008 —  IBM's Cognos subsidiary announced yesterday that its Cognos 8 business intelligence software is now available on the IBM System z10 mainframe running Linux. This allows users to access and analyze information stored on System z mainframes rather than downloading it to a data store on another server.

Until now, Cognos 8 has mainly been targeted at low- and mid-range servers, including Linux and Unix systems. However, Cognos hopes that making its business intelligence for Linux software available on the mainframe will help customers to "efficiently report and analyze transactional systems directly on the mainframe, so workers across an organization can use information to quickly identify and respond to critical business trends.”

The software, priced at US$200 per user, gives targeted information delivery and analysis capabilities to knowledge workers ranging from front-line managers to executives. “This allows organizations across industries to leverage their mainframe investments to improve decision-making and overall business performance,” said Cognos.
