IBM Creates Greenest Data Center
IBM has opened what it claims is the greenest data center in North America. Nearly half of the 115,000-square foot facility created at its Boulder, Colo. site is raised floor space, and the data center features high-density computing systems utilizing virtualization technology and energy-efficient power and cooling technologies. Variable-speed pumps were installed in the air conditioning systems to help save energy involved in cooling. Additionally, the facility will be partially powered by alternative energy sources, including more than one million kilowatt hours per year of wind-powered electricity, IBM executives said.

Equinix Heads to Zurich
Equinix has expanded its Equinix Exchange, a service that helps companies move data to the Internet, to its Zurich Internet Business Exchange in Switzerland. The company said that at the Zurich center, Equinix Exchange will have more than 60 members exchanging Internet traffic. The exchange facilitates interconnection with an Ethernet-central switching fabric, Equinix executives said. It enables data to bypass intermediary networks and can lower overall IP transit costs. Equinix Exchange had already existed in Internet Business Exchange centers in Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, Paris, Singapore, Sydney, Tokyo and other locations around the world.

Univa Puts Emphasis on Reliance
Univa UD, a newly created provider of data center automation and virtualization products, has launched its flagship management product of application delivery environments. The company said Reliance enables managed service providers and internal IT groups to do provisioning actions across physical and virtual infrastructures. Univa also named Alex Brown vice president and general manager of data center automation, as well as Kent Purdy as director of product development for data center automation. Brown previously worked at Dell and served as the global leader in charge of developing infrastructure. Purdy joins the company from Altiris, where he served as senior product alliance manager. Both executives bring more than 20 years of IT experience, the company said.

Rackable Systems Add Density to Servers
Rackable Systems, a provider of servers and storage products for data centers, introduced what it calls five new “extreme efficiency” servers products. The rack-mount designs combine multiple server boards per enclosure, and have interoperability with AMD and Intel processors, according to the company. The servers also deliver up to twice the density of existing Rackable Systems servers. They can be used in both traditional data centers and in the company’s modular data center, the ICE Cube. The five new models bring back-to-back compatible form factor, with two dual socket Intel 5100 chipset boards or AMD Opteron boards. There are also between four and six hot-swap 3.5-inch drives, depending on the model.
