Xenocode Adds Auto-Configuration to Application Studio
By
Jeff Feinman
July 9, 2008 —
Seattle-based Xenocode has added auto-configuration of Microsoft Office 2007 to its flagship Virtual Application Studio 2008.
Virtual Application Studio 2008 with Service Pack 1, available today, is an application virtualization environment that deploys Java, .NET and Windows-based desktop applications. Company executives claimed that the automatic configuration capabilities in the new version eliminate the need to snapshot or sequence configurations of Microsoft Office 2007, as the studio uses source media and license keys to configure itself.
“Sequencing with other solutions, for example Microsoft’s SoftGrid—now called App-V—involves both performing a full installation of Microsoft Office on a clean machine as well as dozens of complex steps,” said Kenji Obata, Xenocode’s CEO, who noted that Microsoft had to publish an entire article on how to sequence Office 2007. “By contrast, with Xenocode’s new auto-configuration wizard feature, virtualizing Microsoft Office is as easy as inserting your Office DVD and entering your license key. The rest of the process is completely automatic.”
The product can import external application configurations and application virtualization products such as VMware’s new ThinApp client, which lets customers run multiple versions of applications on any Windows operating system. Customers with already packaged applications can import those configurations without the need for recapture, according to Xenocode.
Multiple applications can share virtual resources with new virtual environment process controls, the company said. For instance, users can embed Excel spreadsheets into Word documents or run more than one application in the same environment.
Additionally, a new licensing program allows educational institutions, government agencies and ISVs to access the program with no per-application fees.
