3PAR Launches Thin Copy Desktop for VMware VDI

July 21, 2008 —  Utility storage provider 3PAR today launched Thin Copy Desktop for VMware Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI), a solution that can automatically provision hundreds of high-performance virtual desktops while using less bandwidth and storage than traditional storage solutions.

According to 3PAR, more companies are replacing their traditional desktop computers with “virtual desktops” that run on consolidated virtualized remote servers, because they allow IT teams to manage multiple desktops simultaneously, reduce provisioning time, provide greater management flexibility and cut costs.

The 3PAR solution leverages 3PAR’s existing technology to drive down costs for these virtual desktop environments, according to the company. For example, 3PAR Utility Storage provides additional performance, simplified provisioning and rapid recovery for virtualized environments, while reducing required capacity.

Thin Copy Desktop for VMware VDI also leverages 3PAR Virtual Copy (3PAR’s thin copy technology) capabilities to create up to 128 virtual desktops from a single “golden desktop” image, using little additional storage or bandwidth. The process of creating virtual desktops from a golden image can be quickly repeated to create thousands of virtual desktops that together consume only a fraction of the bandwidth and storage resources that would otherwise be required with traditional storage.
