Virtualization Up, Energy Use Down
By 2011, volume server virtualization will lead to a physical server reduction ratio of 1.04 to 1 for server closets, the Silicon Valley Leadership Group predicts in its “Data Center Energy Forecast Report.” If current efficiency trends continue:

Server virtualization will lead to a physical server reduction ratio of 1.08 to 1 for space types other than server closets.
»
Energy efficient servers, which represented 5 percent of volume server shipments in 2007, will account for 15 percent of shipments in 2011.
»
By 2011, average energy use per enterprise storage device will drop 7 percent.
Smooth Sailing for Open Source
Open-source software companies are weathering the tough economic times, with most of the 46 companies responding to a survey by the Open Solutions Alliance predicting an increase in revenue this year. Here’s what the companies said:

83 percent expect a year-over-year increase in revenue for open-source software and services.
»
85 percent of open-source companies have operations outside the United States, and 58 percent see widespread open-source adoption outside the U.S.
»
72 percent called SaaS an important part of their strategy.
»
56 percent said customers are concerned about interoperability between open-source applications.
RFID Rising
IT companies saw an increase in the use of radio-frequency identification (RFID) technology in the second quarter, according to a survey of 155 companies by the Computing Technology Industry Association, it found that 46 percent of companies have customers who have implemented at least one RFID system this year, up from 34 percent 2007.
