Tripwire Keeps an Eye on Virtual Machine Sprawl
By
P J Connolly
September 26, 2008 —
The notion of “virtual sprawl” has emerged in recent months as businesses recognize the potential of virtual machines to proliferate in the absence of controls. Now Tripwire has stepped in with its solution.
The company announced the newest version of its configuration control tools, Tripwire Enterprise 7.5V, at VMworld in Las Vegas. The release offers the ability to monitor elements such as ESX hypervisors (versions 3.0, 3.5 and 3i), virtual switches, virtual machine containers and VM workloads.
It also takes advantage of emerging best practices for using virtualization, with configuration assessment policies that offer what the company characterized as continuous control of one’s virtual infrastructure, including alerts in the event of a deviation from established parameters. The policies can be based on guidance from the Center for Internet Security, payment card industry specifications, VMware’s own advice or a company’s internally developed model.
Tripwire Enterprise can also provide remediation advice to help IT staff quickly return a system to a known state of compliance, the company said.
The features are expected to become available this month as part of the release of the Tripwire Enterprise for VMware ESX Server node.
