Imation releases solid state drive
By
Jeff Feinman
April 1, 2008 —
Removable data storage product provider Imation is offering data storage technology that the company claims is the fastest on the market.
Solid State Drive (SSD), released in early March, is Imation’s first solid state drive product. It uses solid state memory and industry-leading storage and controller technology to accelerate the performance of high enterprise applications, according to the company. The SSD portfolio consists of the MOBI 3000 Series for “high performance end users,” and the PRO 7000 Series, which is ideal for enterprise and corporate IT infrastructures.
Imation executives said that because SSD doesn’t have motors or moving parts, it is faster and more reliable than traditional hard disk drives. It can also provide better shock resistance and reduce overall heating and noise generation. The company said that SSD is ideal for Web servers, network appliances, database servers, video surveillance and white box systems.
The drives are manufactured by Mtron, a startup based in South Korea, which focuses on the SSD market.
MOBI 3000 is the fastest SSD product on the market with read speeds of 100MB per second, maximum write speeds of 80MB per second, and random access time of 0.1 milliseconds, Imation claims. The company said that the PRO 7000 can perform transactions with read speeds of 120MB per second, write speeds of 90MB per second and random access time of less than 0.1 milliseconds.
Another important feature of Imation’s SSD is what it calls advanced wear-leveling technology with a 7-bit error correction code to ensure high data integrity.
