August 1, 2008 — EPA Shaping ENERGY STAR Specification
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) brought stakeholders up to speed on its creation of an ENERGY STAR specification for data centers and servers. The EPA was trying to write up the next draft of its data center ENERGY STAR specification by the end of July. Andrew Fanara, the ENERGY STAR product specifications development team leader, said the EPA will have to make some “tough” decisions on what criteria to include in the rating. The ENERGY STAR Draft Server Specification Stakeholder meeting was held in Redmond. The stakeholders consisted of component manufacturers, storage companies, data center designers, venture capitalists and utilities representatives.

Largest China Data Center Opens
A facility that is said to be the largest professional data center in China has been made operational. Centrin Data Systems created the Beijing data center, which offers disaster backup, hosting of production and operation center and continuing business management. The facility occupies 66,700 square meters. Industry experts said the information security and disaster backup service industries in China have great potential as few Chinese companies are outsourcing their data centers to third-party IT providers. Centrin Data Systems is also building a data center in the Yantai, Shandong province, which will serve as the disaster backup data center in eastern China.

OneNeck Acquires IT Consulting Firm
ERP outsourcing services provider OneNeck has acquired the managed hosting business unit from Ensynch, an IT consulting services firm. Ensynch gives IT consulting, staffing and managed services to mid-market to enterprise-level customers. OneNeck gains a Tier II data center in Phoenix and nearly 100 additional customers. OneNeck executives said Ensynch’s managed services customers will gain access to additional services from OneNeck’s portfolio, including the ability to use ERP and business application hosting services. OneNeck customers, meanwhile, will have access to technical expertise and the Phoenix-based data center.

QSGI Completes CCSI Acquisition
Data center company QSGI has completed its acquisition of Contemporary Computer Services Inc. (CCSI), a Bohemia, N.Y.-based IT services provider. The deal is for US$10.6 million plus and additional stock earnings based on CCSI achieving certain performance milestones. CCSI generated approximately $13.7 million in revenue in 2007. The company does network design, implementation and maintenance services for mainframe and mid-range processors. It also has 24x7 IT monitoring and diagnostics. QSGI executives said the acquisition helps the company become a “more complete and pure” data center maintenance and IT services organization. QSGI originally signed an agreement to acquire CCSI in late May

Vette and Rear Door Heat Exchanger Win Chill-Off
Thermal management specialist Vette was deemed the most energy-efficient data center cooling system in a “Chill-Off” competition sponsored by the Silicon Valley Leadership Group. Vette licenses IBM’s Rear Door Heat Exchanger and was judged against other leading competitor liquid-cooling products. Vette executives pointed out that the rear door heat exchanger doesn’t use fans has and no moving parts, and can remove up to 30kW of heat. The “Chill-Off” contest was conducted at Sun Microsystems data center in Santa Clara, and it tested cooling systems in Sun’s data center environment. Officials from Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory oversaw the testing.

Raritan Releases PDUs
Server monitoring company Raritan has created new Power Distribution Units (PDU) for managing power in data center racks. The rack PDUs monitor the power load in real time and provide advanced warning to protect against circuit overloads on IT equipment, according to the company. PDU-level power information is displayed through a Web browser GUI or command-line interface. Raritan executives also said the PDU’s metering capabilities are helpful for balancing electrical loads between circuits and in planning server build outs. The new PDUs are a new piece of Raritan’s power management portfolio, which includes intelligent and switched PDUs.
