nSuite Buy Secures Symantec Virtual Workspaces
By
Michelle Savage
August 5, 2008 —
Security giant Symantec announced yesterday that it will deliver an extended line of endpoint virtualization solutions, after the proposed acquisition later this month of nSuite, a virtual workspace management company.
The acquisition will give Symantec presentation virtualization technology, which allows users to view and interact with applications running remotely on a server as if they are running on their local computing device. Symantec will also take advantage of nSuite's expertise in connection broker technology, which dynamically allocates traditional and virtual computing resources like information, user profiles and applications, to the endpoint, regardless of device.
Ken Berryman, vice president of endpoint virtualization at Symantec, said that this acquisition will support Symantec’s overall strategy to completely protect and manage endpoints, whether physical, virtual or both.
“We really view virtualization as moving from wave one of point technologies to wave two of separating valuable information from the underlying operating systems and applications,” he said. “Once you separate this information, you can better manage, protect and control it.”
According to Berryman, users and IT departments struggle with endpoint solutions because users want the flexibility to freely use applications that allow them to be more productive, and IT wants to control users’ environments to lower costs. “Now they can separate the user experience and IT delivery of that experience,” he said.
nSuite technologies will be combined with Symantec’s Altiris Software Virtualization Solution Professional. The Altiris software includes streaming and virtualization technology from Altiris and AppStream, and also isolates applications and data from the base operating system.
