New IBM System x Servers Show Remarkable Results

September 22, 2008 —  IBM unveiled its newest System x servers, built around the company’s eX4 chipset for Intel servers and the latest six-core Xeon 7400-series processors.

The System x3850 M2 and the x3950 M2 are expected to ship this month, with prices starting at US$10,389 for the x3850 and $13,389 for the x3950. The company claims that the new boxes performed notably, pointing to an eight-socket System x running Red Hat Linux 5.2 and a 64-bit version of DB2 release 9.5 that it said clocked over a million transaction per minute on a TPC-C benchmark. Similar results were found when tested against TPC-E and a two-tier execution of the SAP SD Standard Application Benchmark.
