Symantec Prepares Endpoint Security Services

March 26, 2009 —  Following its acquisition of MessageLabs, Symantec is readying software-as-a-service-based message security solutions and will begin providing endpoint security services to enterprise customers.

Symantec purchased MessageLabs for approximately US$695 million in cash in October 2008. MessageLabs offers a suite of online service for messaging and Web security to detect malware and unsolicited e-mails.

With the addition of MessageLabs' products to its service portfolio, Symantec is extending its SaaS push to provide online equivalents of its on-premise products, said James Palmer, senior vice president of strategy and business development for MessageLabs in an interview at IDC's Software as a Service Summit in New York City today.

Symantec offers services, including Online Backup, Online Storage for Backup Exec and Online Remote Access.

Upcoming endpoint security services based on MessageLab's infrastructure will target both SMBs and large enterprises, said Palmer. An endpoint is the entry point to a process or service.

The service will provide SMBs with a cost advantage for cloud endpoint security. "There will probably be agents installed at each endpoint," said Palmer.

"In large enterprises, our service would be more relevant for message security integration, replacing separate on-premises appliances."

Palmer did not provide a timeframe for product availability.
